From today’s SBJ: (emphasis is mine):
Willard voters will decide (today) whether to increase the general operating fund property tax levy to 75 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The money would fund the hiring of full-time firefighters and emergency medical personnel, as well as general operating costs. The current operating levy is 25 cents per $100 of value.
Full article is here.
As a side note, Willard also has a sales tax rate of 7.48%. Compare that with 7.60% in Neosho with a –0- property tax rate.
Why wait for failure at the polls in August. Neosho needs the funds now not later. Stand up as a council and impose this property levy. The longer we wait the harder it will be on us. I'm for taxing us now and not later.

ReplyDeleteProperty tax rates are set once per year and must by set by Sept. 1. Unlike a sales tax, any tax imposed on property will not be due until Dec 31st.
I have a question for you. How plausible is it for Neosho to sell off the water and wastewater functions to a private firm. I was just curious. These seem to me to be the only things that would be possible to sell off that isn't tied to a loan somewhere. Although I could be mistaken.
ReplyDeleteIt's a legitimate question, but I don't have a good answer for you on that. The current water/sewer upgrades will encumber the assets as part of securing the borrowing for those improvements.
ReplyDeleteThis was actually the Willard Fire District. It failed nearly 2 to 1.
